Lawrence makes an interesting study for this, because the fictionalized Lawrence is the one best known, but the real Lawrence also had a similar story.

I'm leaning towards something with the Civil War generation, particularly the Southerners.Shermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07155361439404842794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-74232600659404902912012-05-03T08:48:27.251-07:002012-05-03T08:48:27.251-07:00Tim O'Brien is still alive, but 'The Thing...Tim O'Brien is still alive, but 'The Things They Carried' is a series of short stories that deal directly with the post-war experience of Vietnam veterans who returned home to a country that didn't necessarily view them as heroes for all they sacrificed at war.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Things_They_Carriedmervdiddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09535490348621724475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-1751053796540391632012-02-15T11:48:37.844-08:002012-02-15T11:48:37.844-08:00This just goes back to narrowing the topic in orde...This just goes back to narrowing the topic in order to have a more productive conversation. I think "time travel as a plot device" is a better theme than "science fiction" just as I think "mid 20th century American gender roles" is better than "gender roles."

This time period in gender relations is often vilified by the left and glorified by the right. I think this is a good opportunity to look at it honestly.Whitney Athaydehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07904061481669898086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-74401634271721155962012-02-13T12:38:28.286-08:002012-02-13T12:38:28.286-08:00I think ask an interesting question, SP. The mid 20th century is a particular wave of feminism that deals with social and cultural gender inequality rather than women's suffrage (political rights? . It seems that this wave is a natural progression from the first. Perhaps setting a particular time frame will help us to have a more focused discussion. Not related: I think "Bluebeard" would be a good option to help add to this discussion about gender roles.ATPatrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13868589470586291094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-45566641639189651382012-02-13T11:35:05.451-08:002012-02-13T11:35:05.451-08:00I'm curious to hear more of the argument about...I'm curious to hear more of the argument about whether mid-20th Century is so unique a time that gender roles there cannot be compared to any other time.Shermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07155361439404842794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-3717238461359553352012-02-13T08:31:31.742-08:002012-02-13T08:31:31.742-08:00I think Dagny Taggart is a pretty interesting stud...I think Dagny Taggart is a pretty interesting study of Randian gender norms, but I know that's not the main focus of the book. I don't know if you follow my story any more but many updates since then. ;)

Whats even funnier is that I have just started listening to The Help on audio book (I have a fair commute to work each day and audiobooks are a fantastic way to stay up on my reading!) and I saw that you recommended it back in January!

Also you are the first "non" friend, or person that I know to have followed me, which I find pretty cool and inspiring. I hope if you still continue to read that it helps pass along the knowledge of IVF and any infertility struggles. As well as my struggles with anxiety.

And now for my book suggestion. ;) I finished The Hunger Games series last summer and I would literally sit in my car after I pulled into the garage for the evening after work for half an hour to finish a chapter. The books are passionately written. Husband would open the door and ask if I was coming in for dinner with a smile.

Hope you are doing well, thanks for the comment in January!Taylor Mariehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10831499819757294736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-8833208095111300392011-07-27T08:42:36.233-07:002011-07-27T08:42:36.233-07:00I actually never played that game, though it sound...I actually never played that game, though it sounds like the sort of thing Chris would win.Shermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07155361439404842794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8555638843849141223.post-63677323322447609902011-06-15T16:54:33.614-07:002011-06-15T16:54:33.614-07:00It's interesting that the test in the book is ...It's interesting that the test in the book is to catch instant reactions among the Replicants, because if you give them time they can fake empathy. Is the same true for psychopaths? Can they fake their way through society? And does that explain Nate?Shermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07155361439404842794noreply@blogger.com
